Chewy || Company Culture

For a company that takes care of its consumers, how does it shape up its employees? This week, I will be discussing their company culture regarding how past and current employees see working with Chewy.

Chewy was on my search list when I looked at where I wanted to intern because they are a great brand I trust and appreciate with its customers. Looking at their employees' reviews on Glassdoor, it is seen that they are not coworkers but friends and family. Specifically, looking at this statement a current employee made about their experience with Chewy, "We are family. We are a team. We care about our work and each other. Encouragement and positive re-enforcement of performance goals. I can not say enough positive things." It is transparent that they enjoy the atmosphere at Chewy and that the environment encourages growth and overall positivity. Another says, "I feel as though our management team takes a special interest in everybody's personal development, which places a healthy layer of motivation over the whole team's work." Further showcasing that there is growth and constant team collaboration to boost existing employees' skills. Some other things that stand out are that there are good benefits, everyone is approachable, and overall good culture.

However, despite the good reviews I have seen, there are also opposing views of the culture at Chewy, which can provide more insight into the company culture. For some reason, reviews say, "Poor and disorganized communication from leadership, fire drill culture, no internal personnel development," which leads to questioning how they can mitigate the different sectors of Chewy to make it more welcoming so they can all grow and develop and not just those who are in one particular subsection. Looking more into the reviews that highlight Chewy's downsides, there is another one that states, "No communication, no room for advancement past specialty teams, no accountability for higher-ups, no direction given, no standard operating principles for the CS Floor, upper management is a revolving door, will introduce new benefits or bonuses and change them last minute and training is not concise, and the culture did not survive the switch to work from home." Looking at this review, I see that there's a discussion of lack of communication and possibly some disorganization during their time there; however, when looking at this, it is essential to note the date of it, seeing that it is recent. This review was posted on July 19, 2022, showing that this was during the time of the coronavirus, seeing that they lacked accountability. This review further discusses that they advise, "Bridge the gap between the corporate office and the CS Floor, provide feedback and advice to agents trying to move past General CS besides a specialty team. Open shadows for agents interested in learning advanced processes and roles here at Chewy to grow within the company. Provide feedback on skills they may be lacking or resources on how to attain them. Be honest and measure before promising or informing the floor of future changes, be 100% ready to know what will affect what agents." Highlighting what I discussed before, they should be communicative with their plans and how they plan to address their downfalls to their employees.

To wrap up, the company culture of Chewy, like any company, differs from departments or professions. Still, there should be communication, clarity, and understanding of what's changing or what is planned to change to keep everyone in the loop. Working towards stability and growth in the company should be the main focus.
